Regarded as one of the best LGBT movies of all time by critics and media alike, Happy Together (1997) earned Wong Kar-wai the Best Director at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival and is often cited a timeless classic that captures the melancholy of the loss of a relationship and identity crisis on the edge of Hong Kong’s handover to China. Caetano Veloso’s Cucurrucucu Paloma and Astor Piazzolla’s Tango Apasionado are eternally tied to the scenes in Argentina of the falling-apart lovers played by Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung with handpicked live recordings to accompany this well-loved soundtrack.
